For safe transportation of goods by sea, air or land we use different types of containers. They are 20, 40, 45 ft. reusable containers, usually made of metal. Such transport ensures fast loading and unloading operations and reduces the risk of damage to the goods. Let’s take a closer look at what containers they use for transportation of goods.
Classification and types
Containers are divided into several types depending on the transport used (plane, railway, ship, truck), the type of loading (back, top, side, open platform), the characteristics of the goods (liquid, bulk, temperature controlled), the tonnage (up to 2.5 tons, up to 10 and over 10 tons). There are three main container sizes for transporting cargo: 20, 40, and 45 ft. A 40 ft. container holds 21 standard and 24 Euro pallets, while a 20 ft. container holds 9 standard and 11 Euro pallets.
Another classification includes standard containers with the dimensions of 2.44x2.6 m, a high cube – a box with additional 30 cm of height; pallet wide – a container with an increased width of 6 cm; high cube pallet wide – a container with the dimensions of 2.5x2.9 m.
By the type of design, they distinguish between closed containers with double-wing door and a ventilation system, an open top that has an open roof or a roof with a retractable tarp cover, an open side container that is equipped with a side door, and a flatrack that has no side walls or roof.
For transportation of goods that require certain conditions they use isothermal containers with stable temperature conditions; refrigerated containers – to maintain the required temperature; tankers – for food and chemical products.
Transportation requirements
Transportation of goods in containers has certain requirements for the transported products and the correct choice of packaging. The container must comply with the standards and be labeled. The goods must be secured. It is worth paying special attention to preparation of the documents, since the list of required documents depends on the choice of the transport vehicle.
There are separate requirements for the products. Perishable goods must be transported in refrigerated trucks within a short period of time. In some cases, additional wooden crates, cardboard boxes or thick paper is required for packaging. There are particular products that cannot be transported in one container.
